Almost every homeowner is familiar with air filters, which are placed in the air conditioning unit where air is expelled to keep the air quality clean. There are so many different sizes of air filters available to purchase you can’t simply guess which size is the right one for your home. It’s best to measure for a filter ahead of time, then buy the right size so that you don’t need to find out using trial and error. Using the wrong size filter means it won’t work as well at filtering dust and dirt out of the air in your home, which may require air conditioning service over time.
You’ll notice on air filter packaging that they list three dimensions: length, height, and depth (or width). To measure the size of your air filter, start by using an old filter as reference. Measure it to the nearest 1/8″ of an inch, rounding down when needed. Do this for the length, height, and depth to get the correct dimensions. Once you have the correctly sized air filter and are ready to change it out on your unit, slide the old filter out of the slot. Check to make sure it’s dirty and ready to be replaced. Then, insert the replacement filter in the same way you pulled the old one out. It’s that easy!
